Wii save data on the Wii U

Wii save data on the Wii U - Man with small modern device for storage and transfer information

I just recently transferred all of my save data from the Wii to the Wii U, and it's my understanding that data for Virtual Console games on the Wii isn't compatitible with the same VC title downloaded directly onto the Wii U.

However, what I'd like to know is, if I downloaded an original Wii title (example: Super Mario Galaxy) through Virtual Console and then transferred data from the actual Super Mario Galaxy game on my Wii, would I be able to access that data through the VC version on the Wii U? ...Or no?

Best Answer

The save files are compatible if you play the original Wii VC game in Wii mode (an option on the Wii U menu for playing Wii games), but not with the upgraded native Wii U VC versions of the games.

Does Wii data transfer to Wii U 2020?

Remove the SD Card from the Wii when the application asks you to do so. Insert the SD Card into the Wii U console, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the system transfer. Once the process is complete, you can enjoy your content on your new Wii U console.

Can you save game data to SD card from Wii U?

The Wii U includes an SD card slot at the front of the console. But you can't use an SD card for storing Wii U games. SD cards only work for storing pictures of your Miis, holding screenshots in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and transferring data from a Wii to your Wii U.

Where is Wii save data stored?

Plug in the SD card and navigate to the directory /private/wii/title/. Here is where all of the saved games you've transferred to the SD card are located.
