Removing Mercenaries from Hearthstone Training Grounds

I've tried using the new Training Grounds in Hearthstone's Mercenaries section and I'm finding it really difficult to reliably change the Mercs that are assigned to the training grounds to rank themselves up while I'm offline.
Potentially this is related to the mobile interface on the tablet, but taping or dragging the mercenaries does not appear to work reliably. Does anyone know what I'm supposed to be doing to remove currently assigned mercenaries from the Training Grounds.
