RCON refuses to connect to Vultr Server - Team Fortress 2 server

RCON refuses to connect to Vultr Server - Team Fortress 2 server - Low angle of various connectors and USB cables placed on shelf with storage engineer inscription

I made a server for TF2 on a Vultr instance, running Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS.

Everything went well, except that when I try running the RCON commands, it hits me with this error:

Unable to connect to remote server (my.server.ip.here:27015)

I followed the instructions here.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a specific config I need for Vultr?

How do you connect to RCON in tf2?

How to Enable RCON on Your TF2 Server
  • Navigate to the server's control panel, stop the server and open Files > Config Files.
  • Click on Team Fortress 2 Server Settings.
  • Change the value of RCON Password field to the desired password.
  • Press Save and Restart your server.


  • How do you direct connect to a tf2 server?

    Click the Favourites tab, then click Add A Server. Paste the Server IP into the popup box and click Add This Address To Favorites. Select your server from the list and click Connect. (Optional) Enter your Server Password if one has been set, and press Connect.

    Can I host my own tf2 server?

    Instead of joining an existing server, players can opt to create their own servers to host the game.



    VAC banned TF2 accounts are still able to join in VAC secured servers.
