What does a comparator do in?

A comparator circuit compares two voltages and outputs either a 1 (the voltage at the plus side) or a 0 (the voltage at the negative side) to indicate which is larger. Comparators are often used, for example, to check whether an input has reached some predetermined value.

What does powering a comparator do?

Like a repeater, a comparator only allows current to pass through it in one direction: in at the back, out at the front, marked by an arrow on the top. Unlike a repeater, the signal is neither delayed nor amplified.

What do Redstone comparators and repeaters do?

-Comparators can also detect the following: Detect if a container block (chest, furnace, hopper minecart, etc) has an item in it. Unstackable items give the signal strength of a full stack of stackable items. Items which stack to 16 output the signal strength of four 64-stack items for every 16 stack item.
