Why does Sephiroth need the Black Materia?

Sephiroth has seen all the memories that are in the Lifestream and he's sitting on what is practically a bunch of infinite MP. The reason he needs the Black Materia (most likely) is to get to the memories inside it. So he's probably got more magical knowledge then everyone else combined.

How did Sephiroth get the Black Materia?

Black Materia is a Super Soul Break for Sephiroth, learnt from the katana Yoshiyuki (VII). A physical attack, Sephiroth summons the stone to transform into Meteor fragments that crush a single foe four times in succession. Once mastered and integrated, Sephiroth also gains 10 ATK.

Does it matter who I give the Black Materia to?

Cloud will pick up the Black Materia off the ground at the end of the fight but Tifa suggests that you give it to someone else for safekeeping. You can give it either to Barret or Red XIII as Cid, Cait Sith, Yuffie and Vincent will not accept it. Talk to Tifa again after you hand the Black Materia over.

Why does Sephiroth mess with Cloud?

By mentally rewriting his own origins to take on Zack's role, Cloud forgot what originally drove him. Final Fantasy 7's late-game segments confirm Cloud hates Sephiroth because he is a reminder of his failure and weakness, which nearly cost Tifa's life, the person who motived him to join SOLDIER in the first place.
