Why can't I add a new trade route even though I have 2 cities and 2 slots available?

Why can't I add a new trade route even though I have 2 cities and 2 slots available? - Modern car on asphalt road

I have 2 cities. In my capital, I have 1 out of 2 trade slots occupied. That occupied slot trades with my other city. The other city has 1 trade slot which is also free! So I could have three trade routes, yet even not even my second Trade Convoy works. When I try to establish a new trade route, I just can't connect it to any city. Quite infuriating!

The cities are 3 hexes from each other and there's no miasma between them (since the existent trade route works just fine). I'd expect to at least be able to establish 1 trade route from each city to the other, but I can't even do that :(.

It's a balance mechanic. It prevents explosive growth through trade that one could achieve if allowed to create more than one trade route between the same two cites.

How do you get more trade route capacity?

Each city with a Commercial Hub or Harbour ( from Rise and Fall Expansion) a Market or Lighthouse increases your civilisations trading capacity by one. Though these bonuses don't stack, as a city with both a Commercial Hub or Market and a Harbour or Lighthouse adds only one trading capacity, not two!

How do you get more than one trade route in Civ 6?

You are allowed one trade route per city once you've built a Market or Lighthouse in that city. So, if you want to get even more, you're going to need to establish new cities and create Markets or Lighthouses. They do not stack, so building both does not get you two.

Do trade routes benefit both cities Civ 6?

Trade Routes are always sent from the City Center of their origin to that one of their destination, but they benefit from all districts that exist in the destination city's territory.

How do you set up trade routes in Civ 5?

When you decide to establish a route, first move an appropriate unit in a city in range of your destination. When you click on the Establish Trade Route option of the unit, the possible target cities will appear listed.

Answer 2

Each city can only have one trade route to every other city. Since trade routes benefit both destinations, starting a trade route from either city to the other fills that allowed route in both directions. Neutral stations will even allow only one trade route per faction.

To open more trade routes, you will either have to found another city, discover another faction's cities, or find a neutral station.
