What do the numbers under your ammo count mean? - Red Background With 123456789 Text Overlay

In the Division, I know what almost all UI elements mean, except the number below the ammo/clip count, shown below as "20" (highlighted section 2). Even the site I stole the image from neglected to explain what this value meant. Can anyone fill the gap in my knowledge? May seem like a stupid question, but I can't find what it means anywhere.

How do ammo counters work?

The counter uses a microcontroller and an accelerometer to tell when bullets are fired. When the accelerometer senses recoil greater than 22.5g it counts as a round fired. It also uses software to keep after firing vibrations from counting as a round fired.

What is ammo count?

The Ammunition Counter allows the user to keep track of fired rounds. It is designed to work with Standard Armament or Nobles feed chutes using 7.62mm NATO ammunition with M13 links.
