After a quest, I am usually presented with the option of clicking on the drama-happy-sad-face icon (see image) which unveils new quirks, sometimes good and sometimes bad. Do I have to click on those? I mean if I don't click on it and just continue to the hamlet, do the new quirks just stay hidden and inactive?

How do quirks work in darkest dungeon?

If you complete an expedition's goal, you have a flat 45% chance to take on a positive quirk -- and the chance of a negative one is based off each character's stress level at the time of completion. Lastly, a character can have up to 5 positive quirks and 5 negative quirks.

Quirks may be modified by using the Sanitarium in the Hamlet, which allows you to expend gold to either remove a quirk (positive or negative), or to permanently "lock in" a positive quirk, which prevents it from being replaced when new quirks are earned.
